FBI Nabs Chinese National for Meddling

Chinese National Arrested in California Over Alleged Political Meddling

The FBI has arrested Yaoning “Mike” Sun, 64, at his Chino Hills home in California, accusing him of acting as a covert agent for Beijing while entangling himself in local politics. Sun now faces serious charges, including conspiracy and acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government—offenses carrying up to 15 years in federal prison if convicted.

US prosecutors allege that Sun, serving as campaign manager for an unnamed politician in the 2022 local elections, conspired with Chen Jun, a Chinese national already jailed for illegal activities on behalf of Beijing. Their alleged goal? Swaying the election to bolster Chinese government interests, particularly regarding Taiwan—a focal point of China’s global influence campaigns.

After the politician’s victory, Sun reportedly compiled a detailed report for Chinese officials, who thanked him for his efforts. The Department of Justice claims this underscores a deliberate strategy by Beijing to infiltrate American governance.

“Such actions strike at the heart of our democracy,” said US Attorney Martin Estrada. “We cannot allow foreign powers to meddle in our nation’s governance.”

China, for its part, has denied interference. Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Beijing “never interferes in the internal affairs of other countries,” dismissing the allegations as hypocritical finger-pointing by the United States.

The case adds another layer to the tense US-China relationship, casting a spotlight on the shadowy maneuvers of foreign influence campaigns as they creep into American soil.
