Five skiers have been found dead near the Swiss-Italian border in the Valais Alps, according to Swiss media reports. The victims, who had been reported missing, were discovered in separate locations across the snow-covered mountainous terrain.
Authorities revealed that three of the deceased were located approximately 500 meters away from their skis, suggesting they may have been attempting to find shelter or lost their way. The other two victims were found around 200 meters higher on a ridge blanketed in snow.
The search operation, hampered by severe weather conditions, involved helicopters, mountain rescue teams, and drones. The skiers had been missing for several days before their bodies were recovered.
Local officials have yet to confirm the cause of death but suspect that exposure to harsh alpine elements and potential avalanche risks may have contributed to the tragedy. The identities of the victims have not yet been made public.
The incident has cast a somber mood across the alpine region, with authorities urging extreme caution for those venturing into high-altitude areas as unpredictable weather and snow conditions continue to pose serious risks.
