Hormuz shipping route faces risk after reported attack on French ship

A French-operated container ship came under “warning fire” while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to shipping company CMA CGM, which confirmed that no crew members were injured.

The vessel, identified as the CMA CGM Everglade, was targeted on Saturday during its transit through the strategic waterway. Despite the incident, the ship remained operational, with damage reported to be limited to several containers.

The International Maritime Organization, cited by Agence France Presse, said the vessel sustained damage north of Kumzar, Oman, though details regarding the extent of the impact remain unclear. Authorities confirmed that no environmental pollution resulted from the incident.

CMA CGM stated that multiple vessels in the area, including the Everglade, reported being fired upon amid rising tensions following Iran’s decision to reverse its earlier move to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian officials have indicated that the waterway was closed again as part of a retaliatory response to ongoing US measures, including a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports.

The incident underscores growing instability in one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors, raising concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the region.
