Gary Wins Bid for Major Convention Center: Mayor Celebrates Milestone Moment for Indiana and Beyond

Gary, Indiana, USA – The City of Gary has officially been selected as the future site of the new Lake County Convention Center—marking a significant economic development milestone for the region. Mayor Eddie Melton hailed the decision as a “historic and monumental day” for the city and the broader Northwest Indiana area.

“Our vision has always been about building inclusive economic opportunities,” said Mayor Melton. “I sincerely thank the Lake County Commissioners for recognizing Gary’s potential to become a thriving hub for business, tourism, and cultural exchange.”

The newly approved 145,000-square-foot convention center will be strategically located near the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, at the intersection of major U.S. highways I-80, I-294, and I-65. Its prime location makes it ideal for attracting national and international conferences, exhibitions, and large-scale events.

Matt Schuffert, President of Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, added, “This decision paves the way for Gary and Lake County to become a premier destination for tourism and business events. We’re proud to support a project that promises long-term economic growth and job creation.”

The project is fully funded through gaming tax revenue, a $30 million, 20-year commitment from Hard Rock, and matching state funds allocated by Senate Bill 434—originally authored by then-State Senator Eddie Melton and enacted in 2023. Importantly, there will be no increase in the local hospitality tax.

“We’re honored to collaborate on this transformative project,” said Jeannette Peruchini, Managing Principal at global infrastructure firm AECOM. “Our focus now is on swift, strategic implementation to maximize the center’s benefits for the region.”

Construction is set to begin later this year, with strong commitments to inclusive hiring practices—emphasizing union labor, local trades, minority- and women-owned businesses, and Indiana-based vendors. The full development plan includes a 300-room Hard Rock Hotel and is expected to generate hundreds of construction jobs and permanent roles upon completion.

The new convention center has already secured several high-profile bookings, including:

  • The DJX Show, the largest DJ convention in the U.S.

  • The National Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers’ annual gathering

  • Playa Bowls’ Franchisee GM Summit

  • The Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana’s annual convention

Mayor Melton concluded, “This victory belongs to the people of Gary and Northwest Indiana. From grassroots supporters to elected officials and business leaders, your unified voice made this possible. Now, the real work begins—to bring our shared vision to life.”
