Strong Community Support Grows for Gary’s Lake County Convention Center Project
Gary, Indiana – Support continues to build for the City of Gary’s proposed Lake County Convention Center, with over two dozen organizations, including labor unions, business groups, and nonprofits, backing the project after a community meeting earlier this month.
“The response has been overwhelming since we shared our vision on March 6,” said Gary Mayor Eddie Melton. “This convention center is about more than hosting events—it’s about creating jobs, boosting the local economy, and opening new opportunities for businesses and workers.”
The proposed 145,000-square-foot convention center, developed in partnership with Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, has received endorsements from a variety of organizations.
Kevin Benford, President of the Gary Firefighters Association IAFF Local 359, stated, “Hard Rock already brings thousands of visitors, and the convention center will only increase that, benefiting all of Northwest Indiana.”
Dr. Amy McCormack, President of Calumet College of St. Joseph, emphasized its potential for economic and educational growth, while Jamie Miller of the American Cancer Society in Northwest Indiana praised Hard Rock’s community-focused partnerships.
The growing list of supporters includes major organizations like the AFL-CIO Northwestern Indiana Building and Construction Trades Council, Gary Chamber of Commerce, and Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra.
Matt Schuffert, President of Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, expressed gratitude for the widespread support, highlighting the project’s role in tourism, job creation, and long-term economic growth.
The convention center will be funded entirely through gaming taxes, state funds, and a $30 million commitment from Hard Rock over 20 years—without any additional increases in the innkeeper’s tax. Its strategic location along I-80, near I-294 and I-65, makes it an attractive venue for major events.
“This is an exciting time for Gary and Lake County,” said Mayor Melton. “We encourage more businesses and individuals to join us in making this vision a reality.”
