Gary’s Proposed Convention Center Gains Strong Community Support

Gary, IND. – The City of Gary’s proposal for a new Lake County Convention Center near Hard Rock Casino received overwhelming support from hundreds of community members during a special meeting at St. Timothy Church on Thursday.

Mayor Eddie Melton championed the project as a major economic driver for Gary and the surrounding region. “This convention center will not only enhance tourism but also create jobs, boost local businesses, and drive long-term economic growth,” he said.

The proposed 145,000-square-foot facility will be accompanied by a Hard Rock Hotel featuring approximately 300 rooms. The project emphasizes local hiring, with commitments to employing union labor, trade professionals, Indiana vendors, and minority- and women-owned businesses.

Mayor Melton praised Hard Rock Casino’s successful job creation efforts and expressed confidence in their ability to deliver again. “Hard Rock has already provided good, living-wage jobs, and I’m grateful for their pledge to do the same here,” he said.

Funding for the project will come entirely from gaming taxes, state matching funds, and a $30 million contribution from Hard Rock over 20 years, with no increase to the innkeeper’s tax.

Strategically located along I-80 between I-294 and I-65, one of the nation’s busiest corridors, the center is expected to attract major conferences, trade shows, and entertainment events.

Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana President Matt Schuffert emphasized the company’s commitment to the community. “With our expertise in hospitality, entertainment, and convention management, we have the brand power to bring world-class events to Lake County,” he said.

Designed by AECOM with sustainability in mind, the convention center will feature eco-friendly elements such as a green roof, solar panels, and rainwater harvesting. Outdoor spaces will host community gatherings, including farmers markets and movie nights.

City officials, Hard Rock, and AECOM will continue working with stakeholders to advocate for the project’s approval.–PR by Erika Blackwell
