Gen. CQ Brown Calls for Integrated Deterrence to Address Global Challenges

Air Force Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, emphasized the critical importance of “integrated deterrence” in addressing the complexities of today’s strategic environment. Speaking at the 2024 U.S. Strategic Command Deterrence Symposium in Omaha, Nebraska, Brown outlined how the Defense Department’s approach must evolve to meet the challenges posed by a more intricate geopolitical landscape.

“We are in the midst of a mindset shift when it comes to how we think about deterrence,” Brown stated, contrasting the current multipolar world with the bipolar tensions of the Cold War. He explained that integrated deterrence, a cornerstone of the National Defense Strategy, involves a holistic approach that leverages all aspects of national power—coordinating with government agencies, allies, and partners to address threats dynamically and adaptively.

Brown urged immediate action, warning that failure to innovate preemptively could leave the U.S. vulnerable in a future crisis. He emphasized the need to understand adversaries’ cultures, adapt to the evolving information environment, and respond to the rapid advancements in technology that are reshaping global security.

“Integrated deterrence is not just about possessing advanced technology and superior firepower,” Brown concluded. “It’s about orchestrating a ‘symphony of power’—aligning all national strengths to safeguard peace and security.” The symposium, now in its 15th year, brought together experts from various fields to discuss the future of deterrence strategies.–News Desk
