Global Powers Urge Calm as India-Pakistan Clashes Raise Alarms

International Community Calls for Restraint Amid India-Pakistan Escalation

PARIS – May 8, 2025:
Deadly military clashes between India and Pakistan have triggered an outpouring of concern and urgent calls for restraint from the international community, amid fears of a wider conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations.

The escalation marks the most severe confrontation in over two decades, drawing sharp reactions from world powers who stressed the need for diplomacy and de-escalation.

China’s foreign ministry called on both sides to “prioritise peace and stability, remain calm and restrained, and avoid actions that worsen the situation.”

US President Donald Trump, responding to the news, said, “It’s a shame, we just heard about it,” adding later, “I just hope it ends very quickly.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, following conversations with both countries’ officials, emphasized reopening diplomatic channels to prevent further escalation, according to National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes.

A spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the UN chief is “very concerned” about the cross-border military actions and urges “maximum restraint from both sides.”

The European Union echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for a “negotiated, agreed, and lasting peaceful solution.”

France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot acknowledged India’s stance on terrorism but stressed the importance of avoiding further violence and protecting civilians.

Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during a press event with French President Emmanuel Macron, stated: “Now more than ever, reason and clear-headedness are required,” while expressing deep concern over the hostilities.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, addressing parliament, highlighted the concern felt across Britain due to the large South Asian diaspora, and confirmed the UK’s active diplomatic engagement to encourage de-escalation and safeguard civilians.

Russia joined the chorus, urging both parties to resolve tensions through “peaceful, diplomatic means” and warning against further deterioration of the situation.

Turkey strongly condemned India’s overnight missile strikes, describing them as “provocative” and a threat to civilians, warning of the potential for all-out war.

Even the Taliban-led Afghan government weighed in, stating that further escalation is not in the region’s interest and encouraging both nations to pursue dialogue and diplomacy.

As the world watches with growing unease, diplomatic pressure continues to mount in hopes of preventing a larger conflict between two of Asia’s most volatile powers.
