Record Heat Grips Iceland and Greenland in May, Raising Global Climate Concerns
Iceland and Greenland experienced record-breaking temperatures in May, with scientists warning of serious global implications.
On May 15, temperatures in Iceland exceeded 26°C — an unprecedented high for the subarctic island. According to the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group, the heatwave pushed temperatures more than 13°C above the May average based on 1991–2020 data.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office reported that 94% of weather stations across the country recorded historic highs during the month. In eastern Greenland, temperatures peaked at nearly 4°C warmer than preindustrial levels, further highlighting the dramatic shift in regional climate.
“This kind of heatwave may not sound extreme in many parts of the world, but for this region, it’s a major climate event,” said Dr. Friederike Otto, a leading climate scientist at WWA. “And it affects the entire planet significantly.”
The WWA estimates that such extreme temperatures in the Arctic could reoccur once every 100 years under current climate trends — a frequency that may increase with global warming.
Melting ice and warming temperatures are already disrupting life for Greenland’s Indigenous communities, who rely on ice-based hunting for survival. As ice becomes unstable or vanishes entirely, traditional livelihoods are threatened.
Additionally, both Iceland and Greenland face growing risks to infrastructure. “Roads and buildings in these regions are designed for cold climates,” the WWA noted. “Extreme heat can accelerate ice melt, causing floods and structural damage.”
Climate scientists stress that these events underscore the urgency of addressing climate change on a global scale.
