A horse trapped in a mud pit in Melfort, Saskatchewan, was rescued after spending several hours stuck, according to the Melfort Fire Department.
Fire crews were called to the scene at around 7:34 a.m. Wednesday after receiving reports that the horse was trapped. Officials believe the animal had remained in the pit overnight and was completely exhausted.
Responders initially tried to remove the horse using a sling and loader. However, the frightened animal panicked and slipped out of the equipment, making the first rescue attempt unsuccessful.
Crews then changed their approach by digging a gradual slope into the pit. The method allowed them to guide and pull the horse toward safety.
The horse was successfully freed from the mud and is expected to make a full recovery, the fire department said.
The Melfort Fire Department thanked fellow first responders and local residents who assisted with the rescue and provided equipment.
