A major fire at a Calgary landfill could continue burning for weeks or even months, according to local fire officials.
Calgary Fire Department crews have been battling the blaze at the ECCO Recycling facility in the city’s southeast for more than 10 days. Officials said the scale and location of the fire are making it particularly difficult to contain.
Fire Chief Steve Dongworth estimated that the burning material covers around one million cubic metres, an area that could extend across as many as eight Canadian Football League fields.
He said the fire is especially challenging because flames are burning deep inside large pockets beneath a substantial accumulation of waste.
Fire crews have adjusted their strategy as they work to control the prolonged blaze, while city officials are also considering the costs associated with the extended firefighting operation.
