Yemen Houthis Bury 57 Fighters as Clashes Intensify

Yemen’s Houthi group has buried 57 fighters, including 31 officers and three brigadier generals, who were reportedly killed over a 10-day period amid renewed fighting across several parts of the country, state-run Saba TV reported Thursday.

The report did not provide details about where the fighters were killed or the circumstances surrounding their deaths. The Houthis had not immediately issued a statement confirming the reported losses.

Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV separately reported funeral ceremonies for seven fighters on Thursday, including six in Amran province and one in Hajjah province.

Yemen had experienced a relative period of calm since April 2022 after years of conflict between the internationally recognized government and the Houthis, who seized control of the capital Sanaa and large parts of the country in 2014.

However, fighting has intensified again in recent weeks, with clashes reported in provinces including Marib, Al-Jawf, Al-Dhalea and Taiz.

The renewed violence comes as Yemen continues to struggle with a severe humanitarian and economic crisis after nearly 12 years of war.

The internationally recognized Yemeni government is backed by a Saudi-led coalition, while Iran has been accused of supporting the Houthi movement. The Houthis announced a maritime blockade targeting Saudi Arabia in July, adding to regional tensions.

The latest reported casualties highlight the growing risks of a renewed escalation in Yemen despite previous efforts to maintain a period of relative calm.
