Lawmakers Warn Over ODNI Downsizing Plan

Trump Administration Reportedly Cuts Intelligence Workforce

Reports Say Trump Administration Begins Workforce Cuts at US Intelligence Office

The Trump administration has reportedly begun large-scale staffing reductions at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), according to U.S. media reports.

Sources cited by CNN say that hundreds of employees may be affected as part of an ongoing downsizing effort led by acting Director Bill Pulte, who was appointed by President Donald Trump. The move has drawn attention due to Pulte’s lack of prior intelligence experience and the scale of the proposed restructuring.

According to reports, internal steps are being taken to identify positions for elimination, with particular focus on agencies involved in counterterrorism and counterintelligence operations. The National Counterterrorism Center and the National Counterintelligence and Security Center are expected to be among the units most impacted.

Lawmakers from both parties have raised concerns about the potential national security implications of significant staff reductions. Members of the Senate and House intelligence committees reportedly warned that large-scale cuts could weaken the government’s ability to detect and prevent security threats.

In a letter cited by U.S. media, lawmakers urged caution and emphasized that any restructuring of intelligence agencies should be done in consultation with Congress, particularly given the sensitivity of national security responsibilities.

The White House, responding to questions about the reported changes, pointed to the president’s previous statements supporting efforts to streamline and reduce the size of the intelligence office.

Former officials and analysts have also cautioned that major workforce reductions in counterterrorism units could affect operational capacity, though the administration maintains that the restructuring is aimed at improving efficiency.
