India and Bangladesh Start Repatriation of Fishermen

India and Bangladesh have begun the process of repatriating 185 fishermen in a deal forged despite ongoing diplomatic strains between the two countries. As part of the agreement, Bangladesh is releasing 95 Indian fishermen, while India is sending back 90 Bangladeshis. The exchange will be carried out at sea by the coastguard units of both nations.

According to India’s foreign ministry, the Indian fishermen were detained after accidentally drifting into Bangladeshi waters, with a similar fate befalling Bangladeshi fishermen apprehended by Indian authorities. Some of these individuals have been held since September. The exchange, which will be completed by Sunday, includes not only the fishermen but also their vessels, addressing humanitarian and livelihood concerns tied to the fishing communities of both nations.

In addition to the fishermen, two Bangladeshi fishing boats held in India and six Indian boats detained in Bangladesh will also be swapped.

Despite ongoing political tensions—especially since the August overthrow of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina—this agreement highlights the continued importance of mutual cooperation. Relations between the two countries have been tense over issues such as Hasina’s exile and her extradition demands, as well as the arrest of a prominent Hindu priest in Bangladesh. Nevertheless, this repatriation agreement underscores the need for practical collaboration amid political friction, prioritizing the welfare of the fishermen and their communities.
