India Races to Contain Oil Spill After Cargo Ship Sinks Off Kerala Coast
May 26, 2025 | Kochi — Indian authorities are working urgently to contain an oil spill after a cargo ship sank off the coast of Kerala, in southern India. The vessel was carrying 640 containers, including 13 containing hazardous materials, along with 370 tonnes of fuel and oil, officials confirmed.
The ship sank following rough weather conditions, raising environmental concerns in the Arabian Sea region. India’s Coast Guard deployed specialized pollution control vessels and aircraft to prevent the spread of the spill and minimize ecological damage.
A senior maritime official said, “Our teams are actively monitoring the situation and deploying containment booms to control the spill. The presence of hazardous cargo requires extra precautions.”
Environmental agencies have also been alerted, and nearby coastal communities have been advised to stay vigilant. Officials have not yet disclosed the name of the vessel or the nature of the hazardous materials onboard.
The incident poses a threat to marine life and fisheries in the area, prompting regional authorities to coordinate with the central government for a swift response.
