The debate over Donald Trump’s tariffs and his approach toward Canada is becoming increasingly important in Iowa as Republicans seek to maintain support ahead of the upcoming US midterm elections.
The Iowa State Fair, which attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, has become an important venue for politicians to connect with voters and discuss major political issues. This year, Trump’s trade policies are among the key concerns being discussed by Iowans.
Although Trump won Iowa decisively in the 2024 presidential election, his tariff policies are creating uncertainty among farmers and businesses. Canada is particularly important to the state’s economy, accounting for around 30% of Iowa’s total goods exports in 2025 and making it the state’s largest export destination.
Aaron Lehman, a fifth-generation Iowa farmer and president of the Iowa Farmers Union, criticized the administration’s trade strategy as unpredictable. He said farmers were struggling to understand the frequent changes and uncertainty surrounding tariff policies.
Lehman acknowledged that farmers might accept temporary economic difficulties if tariffs eventually produced fairer trading conditions. However, he argued that there was currently little evidence that the policies were moving farmers closer to that goal.
The issue could become increasingly significant as Republican politicians attempt to retain the backing of Iowa voters while balancing Trump’s trade agenda with the economic interests of the state’s agricultural sector.
