US reviews Iran proposal targeting Strait of Hormuz access

Iran has proposed a plan to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz while seeking to end ongoing hostilities, delaying nuclear negotiations to a later phase, according to a media report released Sunday.

The proposal was reportedly delivered to the United States through intermediaries, including Pakistan, as diplomatic efforts remain stalled over Tehran’s nuclear programme. Axios reported that the initiative is designed to bypass immediate disagreements surrounding uranium enrichment and instead prioritise a quicker resolution focused on easing maritime restrictions.

Sources familiar with the discussions said the plan centres on lifting the naval blockade and restoring shipping activity through the strait as a first step. In return, both sides would agree to extend the current ceasefire for a prolonged period or potentially make it permanent, with nuclear talks resuming only after stability is restored.

A US official confirmed that the White House has received the proposal, though it has yet to signal whether it will move forward. President Donald Trump is expected to convene senior national security officials in the Situation Room to evaluate the proposal and consider possible next steps.

Trump has indicated a preference for maintaining pressure on Iran through continued naval restrictions, arguing that limiting oil exports could intensify internal economic strain within the country.

Diplomatic engagement has intensified in recent days. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held talks in Islamabad and Muscat focusing on the Strait of Hormuz before travelling to Saint Petersburg for meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other senior officials.

Earlier negotiations between Iran and the United States in Islamabad failed to produce a breakthrough despite a temporary ceasefire brokered by Pakistan earlier this month. The truce was later extended by Washington.

Key obstacles remain unresolved, including control of the Strait of Hormuz, the US-imposed blockade on Iranian ports, and Tehran’s insistence on retaining its uranium enrichment rights. Efforts to resume negotiations are ongoing as international actors push for a diplomatic solution
