Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, issued a stern warning on Friday against any “destructive interference” in Syria’s future, emphasizing that the country’s destiny should be decided solely by its own people. Writing in the People’s Daily during his first official visit to Beijing, Araghchi underscored Iran’s stance that Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity must be respected without foreign imposition.
Araghchi’s comments come amid a backdrop of longstanding support from both Iran and China for Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, also recently praised Syria’s resilience, expressing confidence that Syrian youth would rise up against forces sowing instability.
Araghchi reiterated that backing Syria’s people is a core principle, one that all global players should keep in mind. China, which has forged strong ties with Assad, similarly opposes foreign-backed terrorism in Syria and has reaffirmed its support for the Syrian population, notably during Assad’s meeting with President Xi Jinping last year.
