Israel is set to launch its first-ever pilot wave energy power plant on December 5 at Warehouse 2 in Jaffa Port. This innovative project, a collaboration between the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality, Atarim, Eco Wave Power, and EDF Renewables Israel, aims to generate electricity from sea waves, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy. The launch event will feature remarks from Tel Aviv-Yafo Mayor Ron Huldai and other key stakeholders.
The project is part of Tel Aviv’s broader commitment to sustainability, with the city being a member of C40, an international network of cities focused on combating climate change. The city’s Environmental and Sustainability Authority has supported the creation of the power plant, which is expected to play a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Eco Wave Power, the company behind the technology, has developed a system that connects floaters to marine structures like breakwaters and piers. These floaters rise and fall with the waves, powering a hydraulic motor that generates electricity. The technology is designed to lift floaters out of the water during storms to prevent damage.
This power plant is a groundbreaking achievement, as the energy generated from sea waves will be integrated into Israel’s national grid for the first time. In addition to the Jaffa station, Eco Wave Power has plans for similar projects in Los Angeles and Porto, Portugal. The project is led by Inna Braverman, CEO of Eco Wave Power, who is also a participant in the “Women for Climate” program, supporting women in environmental leadership roles.
