Japan Approves $18.5M Grant for Pakistan Floods

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will implement the grant through the “Flood Management Enhancement in the Indus Basin” project. A formal signing ceremony was held in Islamabad on Wednesday, with Dr. Kazim Niaz, Secretary of Economic Affairs, and Japan’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Wada Mitsuhiro, representing their respective governments.

The project will focus on establishing a hydrological and hydraulic monitoring system and repairing river structures damaged by the 2022 floods in the Indus River basin and its tributaries. Additionally, Japan’s assistance will support the strengthening of Pakistan’s flood management institutions.

According to a statement from the Japanese government, this initiative is designed to gather vital data for disaster risk reduction, aiming to protect lives, infrastructure, and the economy from future flooding.
