Moscow’s updated nuclear doctrine now includes the possibility of a nuclear response if Ukraine uses Western-made missiles against Russia. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Tuesday that Russia reserves the right to deploy nuclear weapons if its sovereignty or territorial integrity is threatened by conventional weapons, even from non-nuclear states.
President Vladimir Putin signed the decree approving the new doctrine, which also stipulates that any aggression against Russia involving a non-nuclear state, with support from a nuclear state, would be seen as a joint attack. Peskov emphasized that Ukraine’s use of Western missiles could trigger such a response from Russia.
