Malaysia Seeks Stronger Global South Ties

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger ties with the Global South, emphasizing the need to enhance collaboration and tap into growing opportunities, particularly in Latin America. Speaking in Lima, Peru, before the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, Anwar highlighted the shifting global dynamics and the potential for expanding Malaysia’s alliances. While the U.S. remains Malaysia’s top investor, Anwar noted the country also has strong trade relations with China.

During his visit, Anwar was awarded the “El Sol del Peru” honor by President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra. He also met with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew to discuss the upcoming regulatory framework for social media services in Malaysia, set to take effect on January 1. The new regulations will introduce licensing for social media and messaging platforms, with a focus on addressing issues like cyberbullying, scams, and defamation while ensuring innovation and safety for the public.
