Russia Doubts US Policy Change Under Trump

Russia stated on Thursday that it has “no illusion” about any significant shift in U.S. policy under President-elect Donald Trump, emphasizing that the U.S. continues to pursue a strategy of containing Moscow. Gennady Gatilov, Russia’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva, remarked that the only potential change could be in dialogue between the two countries, which has been lacking under President Biden’s administration. He acknowledged Trump’s previous promises to resolve the Ukrainian crisis quickly but expressed skepticism, noting that such a resolution was unlikely. Gatilov also pointed out that during the Trump administration, sanctions and anti-Russian legislation were introduced, making it clear that Russia has no illusions about the new administration’s stance.

On the question of foreign troop support in Ukraine, Gatilov said that Russia had sufficient military capabilities to handle the situation alone but would not turn down help from others. However, he clarified that Russia is not requesting foreign troops and noted the presence of mercenaries and volunteers from Western countries fighting on the Ukrainian side. Gatilov also addressed reports of North Korean troops in the Kursk region, stating that Russia was aware of the situation but had no direct involvement in inviting foreign forces.
