Top-Secret Files Reveal Missing US Journalist Austin Tice Was Held by Syrian Regime
Newly uncovered intelligence documents have confirmed for the first time that missing American journalist Austin Tice was detained by the Syrian government under former President Bashar al-Assad. The revelation comes from top-secret Syrian intelligence files obtained by the BBC, as well as from interviews with several former Syrian officials.
Tice, a former Marine and freelance journalist, disappeared in 2012 while reporting in Syria during the country’s civil war. Until now, the Syrian regime had denied holding him, despite long-standing assertions by the U.S. government that he was being held by the Assad government.
The recently surfaced intelligence documents, paired with direct testimonies from insiders who served under the Assad regime, provide the most concrete evidence to date of Tice’s imprisonment by Syrian authorities following his abduction.
These revelations have renewed calls for greater international pressure to uncover Tice’s current whereabouts and bring clarity to one of the longest-standing cases of a missing foreign journalist in a conflict zone.
