Elon Musk has ignited controversy once again, declaring on his platform X that the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is the only force capable of “saving Germany.” The comment, posted alongside a video criticizing CDU leader Friedrich Merz for ruling out collaboration with the AfD, has drawn sharp rebukes from German politicians and accusations of foreign interference.
As Germany braces for pivotal elections on February 23, following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition, Musk’s remarks have landed like a thunderbolt. The AfD, known for its anti-immigration stance, has surged to second place in the polls, but mainstream parties remain united in their refusal to partner with the controversial group.
Politicians from across the spectrum condemned Musk’s intrusion. Dennis Radtke, a CDU Member of European Parliament, called the tech mogul’s post “threatening and unacceptable,” accusing Musk—set to become “efficiency czar” under incoming US President Donald Trump—of meddling in Germany’s democratic process. “He’s a threat to democracy in the Western world,” Radtke said, labeling X a “disinformation slingshot.”
Alex Schaefer of Scholz’s SPD echoed the outrage, urging Germany to stand firm against interference. Meanwhile, the AfD seized the moment, celebrating Musk’s praise and claiming growing public support.
The German government tread cautiously, with spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann affirming Musk’s right to free speech but voicing concerns over X’s direction since his takeover. Despite criticisms of the platform, officials have opted to keep their accounts active to maintain public outreach.
This is not Musk’s first foray into German politics. Just weeks ago, he took aim at Scholz, tweeting in German that “Olaf is a fool” following the government’s collapse. With Musk’s influence stirring debates and tensions rising ahead of the elections, his latest remarks have added a provocative twist to Germany’s political landscape.
