NASA Awards $117M Contract for 2027 Lunar South Pole Science Mission

NASA has awarded a $116.9 million contract to Intuitive Machines of Houston to deliver six science experiments and technology demonstrations to the lunar South Pole in 2027. This mission, part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, will explore one of the Moon’s most challenging environments, where frigid nighttime temperatures and rugged terrain prevail. The mission aims to investigate the origins of water in the permanently shadowed regions of the lunar South Pole.

This latest award, the 10th under the CLPS initiative and the fourth targeting the South Pole, is a critical component of NASA’s broader Artemis campaign. CLPS missions are designed to advance scientific knowledge and support future crewed missions to the Moon. “By supporting a robust cadence of CLPS flights to various locations on the lunar surface, NASA will explore more of the Moon than ever before,” said Joel Kearns, deputy associate administrator for exploration at NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.

Intuitive Machines has previously completed four task orders under CLPS, including a successful delivery of six NASA payloads to the Malapert A region of the South Pole in early 2024. The upcoming mission will require Intuitive Machines to manage payload integration, launch, lunar landing, and mission operations.

Chris Culbert, manager of the CLPS initiative at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, highlighted the scientific importance of this mission, stating that the instruments will help answer key questions about lunar volatiles, measure radiation, and advance our understanding of the Moon’s environment, which is crucial for future exploration efforts on both the Moon and Mars.

The payloads for this mission include the Lunar Explorer Instrument for Space Biology Applications, which will study yeast’s response to lunar gravity and radiation; a European Space Agency-led drilling suite to identify subsurface volatiles; a Laser Retroreflector Array for precision measurement; and several other instruments designed to study lunar regolith, magnetic fields, and surface composition.

NASA’s continued CLPS missions will play a vital role in achieving a long-term human presence on the Moon and preparing for further exploration of Mars. Two additional CLPS missions are slated for the end of 2024, aiming to deliver payloads to the Moon’s nearside and South Pole, including NASA’s first on-site demonstration of subsurface chemical analysis.–News Desk
