Millions Face Dire Conditions Across Gaza Shelters: UN

UN Warns of Severe Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza Displacement Sites

The United Nations has warned that nearly 1.7 million displaced Palestinians in Gaza are living in extremely poor conditions across thousands of temporary shelters, facing urgent shortages of water, shelter, and essential services.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), continued violence in the region is still impacting civilians, with reports of shelling, gunfire, airstrikes, and other attacks affecting populated areas.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that displacement sites across Gaza are under severe strain, with overcrowding and inadequate infrastructure worsening living conditions. Many shelters reportedly house large numbers of people, while tens of thousands are sleeping outdoors without protection.

Humanitarian assessments indicate widespread lack of access to clean drinking water, poor sanitation, and environmental hazards in many sites, including drainage problems, waste accumulation, and fire risks near shelters. Rodent infestations have also been reported in a majority of locations.

The UN also noted incidents involving unexploded ordnance in some displacement areas, raising further safety concerns for civilians already facing difficult living conditions.

UNICEF separately reported the death of a 17-year-old girl, one of its youth advocates, who was killed while traveling to sit for her high school examination. Officials reiterated calls for the protection of civilians, particularly children, under international humanitarian law.

The UN says the humanitarian situation remains critical as displacement continues and basic infrastructure struggles to meet the needs of affected populations.
