During a crucial meeting at the Pentagon this morning, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III urged his Israeli counterpart, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, to focus on de-escalating tensions with Hezbollah along the Israel-Lebanon border. Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder provided details on the discussions which also covered increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza and addressing threats from Iran and its proxies.
Secretary Austin reinforced the U.S.’s unwavering support for Israel, highlighting over $14 billion in U.S. assistance as part of recent congressional appropriations. He also recalled U.S. support in defending Israel from recent Iranian and proxy attacks, including drone and missile strikes.
The discussions also touched upon the increased provocations by Hezbollah following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023. Austin emphasized the risk these provocations pose, potentially leading to an unwanted war between Israel and Lebanon, which would have severe consequences for civilians in both nations.
Focusing on diplomatic solutions, Austin advocated for intensified efforts to protect Palestinian civilians and aid workers in Gaza. Both Austin and Gallant reviewed strategies to enhance the distribution of humanitarian aid to those in dire need within the region.
Additionally, a significant part of their dialogue revolved around a potential ceasefire, which Ryder noted as crucial for improving security and safety on the ground, thereby aiding the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
In a separate diplomatic effort, Secretary Austin also spoke with Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov today, underscoring the importance of maintaining open lines of communication amidst ongoing global tensions. This call follows a previous discussion with then-Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in March 2023.–News Desk
