Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says the federal government must secure a tariff-free trade agreement with the United States to protect jobs at Stelco.
Poilievre argued that Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government should have negotiated stronger job protections when American steelmaker Cleveland-Cliffs acquired Stelco. He urged Carney to resume negotiations with Washington, honour his commitments and reach an agreement that would safeguard Canadian steelworkers.
His remarks come as Stelco faces planned layoffs amid ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States. Poilievre maintained that a tariff-free deal is essential to providing workers with greater job security and protecting the country’s steel industry.
