Putin and Iranian President Discuss Alaska Summit Ukraine Crisis and Nuclear Cooperation
ISTANBUL –
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian held a phone call on Monday to discuss regional developments, the recent Russian-American summit in Alaska, and nuclear energy cooperation, the Kremlin reported.
According to the Kremlin’s press service, “Vladimir Putin briefed on the main results of the Russian-American summit in Anchorage. Masoud Pezeshkian expressed support for ongoing diplomatic efforts to peacefully resolve the Ukrainian crisis.”
The call followed Putin’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Anchorage, where both leaders expressed a willingness to work toward ending the war in Ukraine.
During the conversation, Pezeshkian reiterated Iran’s stance on its nuclear program, stating that “Tehran will not pursue nuclear weapons” and thanked Russia for its support on the matter.
The two leaders also discussed bilateral cooperation, especially in the energy sector. Pezeshkian’s office said the topics included the ongoing construction of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and Russia’s recent fuel replacement in its operating reactor.
Putin and Pezeshkian agreed to meet in person at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China to strengthen collaboration in multiple fields. They also exchanged views on tensions in the South Caucasus, though no further details were given.
The Kremlin emphasized that both leaders highlighted the importance of continued coordination on regional and international issues.
On August 15, Putin and Trump held a summit in Alaska, discussing potential frameworks to end the Ukraine war. Trump later met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington and held a brief phone call with Putin, which both sides described as constructive.
