U.S. intelligence agencies issued a warning on Friday regarding Russian disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining confidence in the upcoming November 5 presidential elections. A joint statement from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), the FBI, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) noted the circulation of a fake video that falsely alleged illegal voting by individuals from Haiti in Georgia.
The agencies explained that this assessment is based on available intelligence and past activities of Russian disinformation efforts. The Georgia Secretary of State has already dismissed the video’s claims as false.
The statement also referenced other disinformation initiatives, including a video that falsely accused a Democratic presidential candidate of accepting a bribe. The agencies emphasized that these actions are part of a broader Russian strategy to cast doubt on the integrity of U.S. elections and foster division among the American public. They anticipate further attempts by Russia to release misleading content both before and after the election.
This warning follows earlier U.S. government actions in September, which involved charges and sanctions against Russian state media officials for promoting election-related disinformation
