Senegal and Mauritania have officially entered the global gas market, tapping into the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) field, which lies on the maritime border of the two nations. BP, a key player in the project, announced the start of gas production from the field, alongside other partners including Kosmos Energy, Mauritania’s SMH, and Senegal’s Petrosen.
The launch marks a significant milestone, after six years of planning, with Senegal’s Oil Minister calling it a “historic” achievement. The GTA field is expected to produce around 2.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually, a key contributor to the region’s economic growth.
While Senegal and Mauritania are far from matching the output of global giants like Russia or Qatar, the field’s production holds the potential to bring in billions of dollars. This income is hoped to transform both countries’ economies, signaling their emerging role as gas producers on the international stage.
