Suspect in 2022 B.C. Jailbreak Returned to Canada After Spain Arrest

Extradition Marks Key Step in Escape Investigation

A man accused of helping a gang-related killer escape from a British Columbia correctional facility in 2022 has been extradited to Canada following his arrest in Spain.

The Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) said Spanish authorities transferred John Potvin to Canadian officials on Thursday. Investigators then returned him to Canada to face charges linked to the high-profile jailbreak.

Arrest Followed International Manhunt

Potvin, who police have identified as an Ottawa resident, was arrested in Spain four months ago. Before his capture in September, authorities had issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant and an INTERPOL Red Notice.

Police said Potvin is one of three men charged with prison breach and conspiracy to commit prison breach. Investigators believe the group played a role in organizing and carrying out the escape.

Escape Involved Convicted Gang Figure

The case centers on Rabih Alkhalil, who escaped from the North Fraser Pretrial Centre in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, while standing trial in 2022.

Alkhalil faced charges related to the 2012 fatal shooting of a rival gang member inside a crowded Vancouver restaurant. After fleeing custody, a court later convicted him in absentia of first-degree murder.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the escape and the roles of those involved. Police have not released further details about Potvin’s court proceedings or next appearance.
