Rights Groups Welcome Canada’s Removal From Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’
Advocates Reject US Gaza Initiative
Canadian human rights organizations have welcomed the decision by US President Donald Trump to withdraw an invitation for Prime Minister Mark Carney to join the proposed “Board of Peace.” The groups said Canada should avoid involvement in what they described as a flawed and harmful plan related to Gaza.
They argued that participation would contradict Canada’s commitment to international law and human rights, particularly during an ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
Muslim Council Calls Decision a Relief
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) said on Friday that it was relieved Canada was no longer invited to take part in the Trump-led initiative. The organization stressed that the timing of the proposal raised serious concerns.
According to the NCCM, Canada should focus on supporting international legal standards instead of joining initiatives that ignore widespread human suffering. The group added that the so-called Board of Peace undermines Palestinian self-determination and does not reflect Canadian values.
Concerns Over Legitimacy and Messaging
Similarly, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) said that Carney’s participation would have given the board credibility it did not deserve. The advocacy group warned that involvement could weaken Canada’s stance on justice and human rights.
CJPME also said Canadians expect clear and principled opposition to what it described as an overreach of power. In its view, joining the board would have sent confusing signals at a critical time.
