Dallas, April 15, 2025 — A student opened fire inside Wilmer-Hutchins High School in South Dallas on Tuesday, injuring at least four people, including three with gunshot wounds, according to local authorities. The suspect has been taken into custody, and the campus is now secure.
The shooting occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Langdon Road, prompting a swift response from the Dallas Police Department and the Dallas Fire Department. Emergency services rushed to the scene as terrified students fled.
“I turned around and heard seven shots. Everyone just started running,” one student recalled.
The Dallas Independent School District (DISD) confirmed the arrest Tuesday evening, but the shooter’s identity and motive remain undisclosed as the investigation continues.
Assistant Chief of Dallas ISD Police Christina Smith revealed that the firearm was smuggled into the school outside regular hours, bypassing the institution’s metal detectors and clear backpack policy. Authorities are now examining how the weapon evaded security protocols.
Three of the victims, aged 15 to 18, sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were transported to Baylor Scott & White, Parkland Hospital, and Methodist Dallas for treatment. The fourth victim reportedly suffered minor injuries in the chaos.
Aerial footage captured the scene with a large law enforcement presence and 900 students being evacuated toward nearby Eagle Stadium.
This marks the second school shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins in just over a year. In April 2024, a student was shot inside a classroom, raising long-term concerns over campus security.
DISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde voiced deep frustration:
“This is becoming way too familiar—and it absolutely should not be.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott condemned the “senseless violence” and offered state resources and support to victims, families, and school authorities.
Classes at Wilmer-Hutchins High School have been suspended for the remainder of the week, with mental health support services to be provided for affected students and staff.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not yet commented on a possible motive behind the attack.
