Gary Police Arrest Suspect in Illegal Tire Dumping Case
The Gary Police Department, working alongside the Department of Code Enforcement, has arrested a suspect involved in illegal tire dumping. The investigation began earlier this month after police received a report on March 5, 2025, about a grey Chevy truck dumping tires near 38th and Broadway. Officers tracked the vehicle using the city’s automated license plate reader system.
On March 7, 2025, police and Code Enforcement officers inspected the Lake County Collision Center at 3734 Malcolm X Drive. Inside the facility, they discovered large stacks of tires. Upon finding that the business was operating without the required licenses, officials issued multiple citations and shut it down.
The investigation continued, and on March 14, 2025, authorities tracked the suspect vehicle in East Chicago and Gary. The Hammond Police Department later located it in the 4700 block of Johnson Avenue in Hammond. Officers observed a man matching the suspect’s description entering the truck. Hammond Police conducted a traffic stop, allowing Gary Police officers to arrest 49-year-old Armando Ignacio Martinez of South Holland, Illinois. His vehicle was impounded, and he was booked without incident.
Illegal dumping remains a major issue in Gary, causing environmental and safety concerns. The Gary Police Department is committed to addressing the problem and appreciates the collaboration of the Hammond Police Department and the community in this case.
