KUWAIT CITY: Syria and Kuwait have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations by establishing a joint high-level coordination committee aimed at expanding cooperation in diplomatic, economic and investment sectors.
The agreement was reached during an official visit by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, who held talks with his Kuwaiti counterpart Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in Kuwait City on Monday.
According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, the new committee will be jointly chaired by the two foreign ministers and will oversee the implementation of bilateral initiatives. Both sides also agreed to reactivate existing joint committees to accelerate cooperation across various fields.
Discussions focused on enhancing diplomatic coordination, facilitating the exchange of ambassadors and strengthening economic ties. The two countries also agreed to work toward establishing a Syrian-Kuwaiti Business Council while increasing collaboration between their chambers of commerce and business organizations to promote trade and investment.
During the visit, al-Shaibani also met with Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, where both sides reviewed ways to deepen political and economic relations and exchanged views on regional developments and efforts to promote stability in the Middle East.
The Syrian foreign minister reaffirmed Damascus’ support for Kuwait’s sovereignty and security, while condemning attacks targeting Kuwait and other member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
The visit comes against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions following recent exchanges between the United States and Iran, including renewed instability surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
