Syria Israel Officials Set to Meet in Baku Amid Rising Tensions
DAMASCUS – A Syrian and an Israeli delegate are expected to hold a discreet meeting in Baku later Saturday, according to a diplomatic insider familiar with the matter. The discussion will take place alongside Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s ongoing visit to Azerbaijan.
The source, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the topic, clarified that President Sharaa will not participate in the meeting. Talks will reportedly center on Israel’s recent military activity inside Syrian territory.
Israel, a prominent weapons provider to Azerbaijan, maintains strong diplomatic ties with the Caucasus country, which borders its rival, Iran.
Following the ousting of long-serving leader Bashar al-Assad in December, Israel launched numerous air operations across Syria. These actions aimed to prevent strategic weaponry from falling under the control of the interim government led by Sharaa, which is backed by Islamist groups.
The meeting in Baku marks a rare and cautious attempt at communication between the two nations amid high regional tensions. Final outcomes from the talks remain uncertain as both sides maintain strict confidentiality.
