Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has welcomed the United States’ decision to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, describing the move as an opportunity for the country to leave behind a difficult period and begin a new phase of development and reconstruction.
In a video message released early Tuesday, al-Sharaa said Syria was moving beyond what he described as a painful chapter of its history. He expressed hope that the removal of the designation would allow the country to focus on economic development, reconstruction and rebuilding.
Addressing the Syrian people, the president congratulated them on the lifting of sanctions and restrictions, describing the decision as an important achievement for the country.
Al-Sharaa also expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump, calling Washington’s decision a historic step for Syria. He additionally thanked countries and international partners that had supported Syria and its people during the difficult period.
The announcement followed Washington’s formal decision to remove Syria from the state sponsors of terrorism list, a designation that had remained in place since 1979.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry also welcomed the development, describing it as the beginning of a new chapter in Syria’s international relations. The ministry said the US decision could contribute to economic recovery, facilitate reconstruction efforts and help promote greater stability and security in the country.
The removal of the designation is therefore being presented by Syrian authorities as an important opportunity to improve international relations and create better conditions for the country’s economic and political recovery.
