Syria has welcomed the United States’ decision to remove the country from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, describing the development as a major outcome of the political transformation brought about by the Syrian people.
Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani congratulated Syrians on what he called a historic milestone, noting that Syria had remained on the US terrorism list for 47 years. He argued that the designation was linked to the policies of the former Syrian regime and did not represent the wishes or identity of the Syrian people.
Shaibani said the decision demonstrates the transformation taking place in Syria and reflects the new government’s stated commitment to international peace, security, cooperation and partnership with the United States and other countries.
Under President Ahmad al-Sharaa, he said Syria would continue working to overcome the consequences of years of international isolation. The government aims to establish relations based on transparency, mutual interests and respect, while promoting development and stability in Syria and the wider region.
The foreign minister expressed appreciation to US President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, US envoy to Syria Tom Barrack, members of Congress and other officials who contributed to the decision.
The announcement came after the US State Department formally removed Syria from the state sponsors of terrorism list. Washington also revoked the designation of al-Nusrah Front, also known as Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist organization. The US Treasury Department supported the changes.
