NONTHABURI, Thailand — A tragic mass shooting at a school in Thailand’s Nonthaburi province on Friday left eight people dead and more than 30 injured, according to Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and local media reports.
The violent rampage unfolded at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, located just northwest of Bangkok. Public broadcaster Thai PBS reported that the gunman was a 14-year-old ninth-grade student, who was later found dead inside the compound after taking his own life. The official death toll includes the shooter’s grandparents, whose bodies were discovered by authorities at the teenager’s home shortly after the attack.
Prime Minister Anutin confirmed that nine of the injured victims remain in critical condition. He noted that the crime appeared meticulously planned, with the attacker following a deliberate sequence of steps and objectives. When police located the shooter, he still carried more than 30 unused rounds of ammunition intended for the firearm, which belonged to his grandfather. Initial investigations suggest the student was suffering from severe study-related stress.
During the attack, the teenager initially barricaded himself inside the school premises, briefly hindering law enforcement from securing the campus. Quick-thinking teachers managed to evacuate hundreds of students and staff away from the danger zone while officers moved in. Police have since fully secured the compound and launched a broad investigation into the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
