US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that American forces had launched major strikes against Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz, warning Tehran that any retaliation would result in an even stronger US response.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the attacks were aimed at Iranian targets close to the strategic waterway. He described the military action as a response to what he called Iran’s unsuccessful attempt to place sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump also referred to an Iranian missile attack on a US military base in Jordan, claiming that Iran had launched eight missiles and that all of them had been intercepted.
The US president warned that Iran would face a much more severe attack if it responded to the latest US strikes. He said Washington had an additional military operation prepared and suggested that a further escalation could cause extensive destruction in Iran.
Speaking later to Fox News, Trump said US forces had waited until Iran was close to rebuilding its radar capabilities before attacking the facility. He again warned that any Iranian retaliation would trigger a stronger military response.
Trump went as far as saying that if Iran retaliated for a third time, the consequences could threaten the country’s survival.
Earlier in the day, US Central Command confirmed that American forces had begun attacking targets belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
According to the command, the strikes followed alleged attempts by the IRGC to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz as well as US military personnel stationed in the region.
