Trump Signals Influence Over Netanyahu’s Political Future Amid Rising Israel–Lebanon Tensions
US President Donald Trump has drawn fresh attention to his strained relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after sharing a media report discussing Netanyahu’s uncertain re-election prospects and Washington’s influence over Israeli politics.
On Saturday, Trump reposted an article on his social media platform highlighting claims that he “holds the cards” in shaping Netanyahu’s political future. The report suggested that Trump could play a decisive role in Israel’s next election cycle, particularly as internal and regional pressures mount.
The article also referenced Trump’s remarks in an interview with Israeli media, in which he indicated he would “have to look at who’s running,” while discussing potential support for Netanyahu. Although he described Netanyahu as “most likely” to receive his backing, Trump also noted he would evaluate alternative candidates, including former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and senior political figure Gadi Eisenkot.
The developments come at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Tel Aviv over Israel’s military operations in Lebanon. According to the report, Trump has increasingly criticized Israel’s handling of the conflict, describing aspects of its military campaign as prolonged and overly aggressive, particularly the strikes on Beirut ahead of a ceasefire understanding linked to broader regional diplomacy involving Iran.
The US president has also previously urged Netanyahu to adopt what he called a “softer approach” in Lebanon, warning that continued escalation could undermine diplomatic efforts in the region.
Media reports, including from the Wall Street Journal, suggest that relations between the two leaders have deteriorated in recent months as the White House pushes for a negotiated exit strategy from the wider regional conflict. Sources familiar with their communications claim Trump has grown frustrated with Netanyahu’s repeated calls for intensified military action.
The reports further allege that Trump has at times sharply criticized the Israeli leader during private discussions, urging restraint and caution in military operations. Despite this, US support remains a critical factor in Israel’s international positioning, with Trump reportedly reminding Netanyahu of Washington’s role in sustaining diplomatic and strategic backing.
As tensions continue in Lebanon and across the wider Middle East, the evolving Trump–Netanyahu dynamic is increasingly seen as a key factor influencing both regional security decisions and Israel’s domestic political landscape.
