In a recent interview with Time magazine, US President-elect Donald Trump strongly criticized Ukraine’s use of US-supplied missiles for strikes deep into Russian territory, suggesting that such actions could escalate the ongoing conflict. Trump called the situation “crazy” and voiced strong disagreement with the decision to send missiles hundreds of miles into Russia. He questioned the reasoning behind the move, stating, “Why are we doing that? We’re just escalating this war and making it worse.”
The comments come after President Joe Biden lifted a ban last month, allowing Ukraine to use longer-range missiles, specifically the ATACMS, for deeper strikes within Russia. This decision followed persistent requests from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and was made amid escalating threats, including Russia’s deployment of North Korean troops to the frontlines.
Trump, who has expressed a desire to quickly end the war, said he has a “very good plan” to help resolve the conflict but refrained from sharing details, suggesting that revealing it prematurely could undermine its effectiveness. He also stressed the importance of reaching a peace agreement, noting that abandoning Ukraine is not a solution.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence recently accused Ukraine of using ATACMS missiles in an attack on a southern airfield, to which the Kremlin vowed a response. Trump’s remarks underline his skepticism about the ongoing US involvement and the potential for escalation, especially with the involvement of North Korean forces. He emphasized the staggering loss of life on both sides of the conflict and the urgency of finding a resolution.
