Vargas Leads Türkiye Into Semifinals

Türkiye reached the semifinals of the 2026 CEV Women’s European Volleyball Championship after beating Germany 3-1 in Istanbul on Thursday.

The defending champions won the first, third and fourth sets 25-18, 25-18 and 25-22, while Germany claimed the second set 25-22 to briefly level the match.

Türkiye dominated the opening set after quickly establishing a 5-1 lead. Although Germany reduced the gap during the set, the hosts regained control and secured the opening set. Melissa Vargas was particularly impressive, scoring eight points, including four aces.

Germany responded strongly in the second set, taking an early 6-1 advantage. Türkiye attempted to close the gap but Germany maintained its lead and eventually won 25-22.

Türkiye returned to form in the third set, building an early 8-5 lead and extending it to 12-6. They controlled the remainder of the set to win 25-18 and move closer to victory.

The fourth set was competitive, but Türkiye gradually created separation and led 21-16. Germany attempted a late comeback, but the defending champions remained composed and finished the set 25-22.

Melissa Vargas led all players with 26 points, helping Türkiye secure a place in the last four.

Türkiye will face Serbia in the semifinal in Istanbul on Saturday.
