Two unidentified bodies were found off Tunisia’s eastern coast after a migrant boat capsized, with one person still missing and 28 rescued, local media reported on Friday. Most of the passengers were from Tunisia, and the boat had departed from Teboulba, a coastal town located around 180 kilometers south of Tunis.
Tunisia, along with neighboring Libya, has become a key departure point for migrants, primarily from other African nations, seeking to reach Europe via dangerous Mediterranean Sea crossings. Italy, which is just 150 kilometers from Tunisia, is often their first destination.
Earlier this year, authorities recovered the bodies of 15 people believed to be migrants in Monastir, and in September, 36 would-be migrants were rescued off the coast of Bizerte in northern Tunisia.
