Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder emphasized the potential for diplomacy in the Middle East during a recent news conference, while also detailing the U.S. military’s precautionary measures in the region. U.S. forces are bolstering their presence in the U.S. Central Command’s area of responsibility, with the deployment of F-22 Raptor aircraft and the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, which includes F-35C Lightning II aircraft. Additionally, the USS Georgia, a guided missile submarine, is moving into the area.
Currently, around 40,000 U.S. service members are stationed in the Centcom region, as the Defense Department closely monitors the evolving situation. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III remains in frequent contact with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and other regional partners, underscoring the U.S.’s commitment to de-escalation, securing a cease-fire, and resolving the hostage situation in Gaza.
Ryder noted that the U.S. military adjustments are intended to enhance force protection, support Israel’s defense, and prepare for various contingencies. He also reiterated the importance of minimizing civilian harm during Israeli operations in Gaza.
As tensions rise, with threats from Iran and Iranian-backed groups, Ryder affirmed that the U.S. aims to prevent a broader regional conflict. However, he made clear that the U.S. stands ready to defend Israel if necessary, while prioritizing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation.–News Desk
