ABU DHABI—On Tuesday, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced the successful mediation of a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, resulting in the release of 180 war captives. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that this marks the fifth such mediation effort since the start of the year.
“The latest mediation is a result of the UAE leveraging its distinct ties and partnership with both sides, including its role as a reliable mediator between the parties,” the Ministry stated.
Since the beginning of 2024, UAE’s diplomatic efforts have facilitated four previous prisoner exchanges between Russia and Ukraine. Additionally, in December 2022, the UAE successfully mediated a high-profile prisoner swap between the United States and Russia.
As the conflict continues, with Russia’s military operation in Ukraine ongoing since February 24, 2022, the UAE has maintained its stance as a neutral broker. The Gulf nation strives to promote dialogue and de-escalation between the warring parties.
Russia has cited Ukraine’s aspirations to join the US-led NATO alliance as a significant threat to its national security, a key factor behind the ongoing conflict.–News Desk
