UAE Unveils Dh421M Water-Saving Projects After Heavy Rains

The UAE is investing Dh421 million into water conservation projects to address the challenges posed by heavy rainfall, with an emphasis on sustainable water management. These projects include the construction of 20 new water facilities and the expansion of three existing dams, particularly in the eastern and northern coastal regions. Announced as part of a larger Presidential initiative, these projects aim to enhance the country’s water infrastructure and respond to the heavy rainstorms that swept the nation in 2023.

The first phase of this initiative focuses on hydrological studies of the basins along the northern and eastern coasts, where experts are evaluating the current water systems and providing innovative solutions to mitigate potential damage from heavy rainfall and runoff. The goal is to create resilient, sustainable water infrastructure such as dams, canals, and lakes, ensuring the protection of vital resources.

The urgency behind these measures is linked to both the increased rainfall due to climate change and the vulnerability of the UAE’s water infrastructure. FNC member Naema Al Sharhan emphasized the importance of enhancing the country’s dams, which she views as vital safeguards against both flooding and water shortages. With rising climate challenges, these water-saving initiatives are seen not only as infrastructural improvements but also as crucial steps toward safeguarding the nation’s future water security.

These projects align with the UAE’s Water Security Strategy 2036, aimed at ensuring a reliable water supply in both normal and emergency situations.
