Ukraine Begins Verification of Starlink Terminals in Cooperation with SpaceX
Defense Ministry Implements White List for Satellite Terminals
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced on Monday that Ukraine is launching a verification procedure for Starlink terminals operating within the country.
Fedorov stated on Telegram that the government has approved a resolution to introduce a “white list” of approved Starlink terminals. Only terminals that are verified and registered will be allowed to operate in Ukraine, while all others will be disconnected.
“This measure is implemented in coordination with SpaceX and was prompted by the use of Starlink by Russian forces,” Fedorov said.
SpaceX Cooperation Responds to Security Concerns
Fedorov recalled that the Defense Ministry contacted SpaceX within hours after reports emerged that Russian drones using Starlink connectivity were operating over Ukrainian cities. He thanked Elon Musk and SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell for their swift response in addressing the issue.
Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski also urged Musk on X (formerly Twitter) to prevent Russians from exploiting Starlink to target Ukrainian cities.
Strategic Implications
The US-based Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian forces are increasingly using Starlink-equipped drones to extend strike ranges, exploiting Ukraine’s air defense gaps. These attacks pose a serious risk to the country’s critical infrastructure.
Fedorov emphasized that Starlink cannot be sold or used in Russia due to US sanctions, which remain in place as the Ukraine war enters its fifth year.
